Book an appointmentOCD can feel like being stuck in a loop. An unwanted thought shows up, it feels unbearable, so you check, wash, ask for reassurance, or go over it in your mind, just to feel okay again. Then it starts over. It can feel never ending and impossible to get out of. Compassionate and evidence-based psychological treatment can support you to break the cycle of OCD.
What OCD can look like
OCD is made up of obsessions and compulsions that work together, creating the OCD cycle. Obsessions are the recurrent and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that show up and cause distress. These are often known as intrusive thoughts. Compulsions are the behaviours or mental habits that we do in response to the obsessions, whether it's to relieve the distress caused by them, or to try and neutralise the obsession or stop something bad from happening. Unfortunately, the compulsion usually only relieves distress temporarily, causing the cycle to repeat and repeat. This is why OCD can feel so sticky and hard to stop.
The relief from a compulsion is short-lived, so the obsession returns, and the cycle repeats.
Intrusive thoughts that feel distressing and are hard to shake
Mental compulsions, like reviewing, counting, or quietly seeking certainty inside your own head
Reassurance-seeking, whether that's asking people close to you or turning to Google
Avoiding people, places, or situations that set off the obsessions
Physical compulsions, like washing, checking, or repeating actions until they feel right
A persistent sense that something isn't "just right"
How I work with OCD
Together, we'd use Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), the treatment with the strongest evidence base for OCD. We'd go at a pace that feels workable for you. We may also use some techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help you manage distress and make steps towards building a meaningful life beyond OCD.
Who this is for
I work with adults and adolescents (15+) living with OCD, Australia-wide. No referral is needed to book, and Medicare rebates may be available with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.
